A keyword is a phrase that you put into Google (or any other search engine or platform with search capability) in order to find information.
By understanding the keywords that are relevant to your target audience, you can:
- Come up with new content ideas to target (e.g. your next blog post)
- Understand what to target in terms of keywords for your existing content to have the highest chance of reaching your audience.
- Plan out and test Google Ads/PPC campaigns.

So how do you find good keywords for your business?
You can start by brainstorming ideas. You know your industry (or at least I hope you do) so you should have a fair idea of what kinds of keywords your potential customers might be searching.
However, it pays to go deeper and think outside the box.
It's also helpful to have an idea of how many people are searching any given keyword.
After all, there's not much point in going after keywords that almost nobody is searching (okay, this isn't strictly true - but it's a topic for another time).
The secret here is to use keyword research software.
This is a type of software that allows you to input keyword ideas and then see many suggestions of what real people are searching, as well as data on how many people are searching these potential keywords, and possibly even how much you might need to spend to get Google Ads clicks.
